(Tucson, Arizona) Misunderstood in Quebec, the GX nevertheless triumphs elsewhere in the world. In the United States and the Middle East, in particular, where we appreciate this vehicle closely derived from the legendary Land Cruiser Prado.
Even if the GX takes on brand new clothes this year, Quebecers will perceive it as a niche vehicle. However, despite its limited distribution, the GX will contribute, we believe at Lexus, to strengthening its image. On this subject, in Canada last year, Lexus ranked third among the most popular brands in its (luxury) niche, behind Tesla and Audi.
We will understand that the GX evokes adventure. Moreover, the exploits of its ancestors remind us that this utility vehicle fears neither stumps, nor fords, nor steep slopes. Just that is enough to fuel the imagination of a clientele. This, by Lexus’ own admission, will never experience all of its talents. Only buyers of a “second hand” GX, they say. Therefore, several particularities of this model (external cameras to navigate between rocks and disconnection of the anti-roll bars) will rarely, if ever, be used.
Luckily, the GX’s off-road capabilities aren’t its only attribute. Its ability to tow (up to 9,000 lb depending on the version) represents another reason for desire. The hitch system and brake distribution, to name just two, are standard on the long list of features of this GX. Well seen. On the other hand, this bourgeois utility vehicle ignores certain elements – today considered essential – such as an assistance device allowing, for example, to secure a trailer without leaving the driving position. In addition, the size and vertical positioning of the exterior mirrors appear unsuitable.
Finally, there is another reason which explains the presence of the GX in the Lexus catalog, undoubtedly the most important: it appeals a lot to women. Moreover, they make up nearly 50% of its clientele, a significantly higher proportion than the average.
Long gestation
1/8
Lexus has been simmering this third generation of the GX for 10 years, almost half of which was devoted to the scaled technical platform. Heavier, this architecture has the particularity of having crosspieces up to its ends. This made it possible to eliminate several interferences with which engineers had to deal when defining the joints of this vehicle.
Concerned about its image of sustainability, Lexus designers rely on proven and relatively simple solutions. In short, no complex and expensive air suspension to repair. And the GX isn’t any more uncomfortable. In addition, with widened tracks, the new GX proves to be much more stable than in the past. The changes in trajectory are more determined, but the strong steering gear ratio encourages you not to jostle it excessively.
Never mind that small roads and mountain bends are not the GX’s preferred terrain. On the other hand, its very high center of gravity no longer generates the annoying nodding characteristic of its predecessor which gave its occupants the feeling of traveling on the back of a camel.
The GX still rolls a little in curves and understeers quickly, but it is held together better as long as you adopt smooth driving. This is strongly recommended to moderate the consumption of the 3.4 L V6 which now powers it. The presence of a 10-speed gearbox, with impeccable performance, is unfortunately not enough to reduce the mechanical appetite. Lexus management is already promising a hybrid engine, but is refraining for the moment from saying when it will be offered. Until then, you have to deal with an engine that performs its job correctly – but not excessively – as long as you fuel it with high octane gasoline (super).
Lack of eloquence
Lexus offers several variations of the GX, but on the eve of its launch, the Overtrail version promises to be the most popular flavor of all if we judge the order forms from the brand’s dealers. Arranged in five places (the others can seat up to seven people), the Overtrail is, by far, the best suited to discovering Canada in every nook and cranny, but is that really what you are looking for?
In everyday use, on perfectly asphalted roads, the Overtrail has its shortcomings. The sole of its tires turns out to be noisier and more exclusive (it is specific to this vehicle). Its roof racks are more versatile, but harder to reach. Finally, its higher loading threshold makes access to the trunk more difficult. The other versions offer increased flexibility and a slightly quieter ride.
Regardless of the livery, all GXs adopt the same interior furniture. Only some coverings are more elegant than others. Never mind that this Lexus doesn’t have the cachet expected of a vehicle of this price. Its rivals appear more rewarding, even more avant-garde. But not necessarily more reliable or more sober.
