[Lettre] Mr. Drainville, the three-speed school and the evidence

Since taking office, Mr. Drainville has insisted on evidence in education. He’s not wrong: we need educational research solidly backed by science to help our young people learn better.

For example, the supposed “three-speed school” in Quebec. In 2016, the Superior Council of Education declared that our school system was the most inequitable in Canada, among other things because of the existence of this supposed “three-speed school”. In 2022, the Institute for Socioeconomic Research and Information, in the article “Where is the three-speed school in Quebec?” continues to assert that school segregation is on the rise in Quebec. The recent documentary The school differently (Cimon, 2023), broadcast by Télé-Québec, agrees. Organizations and documentarians used “evidence” and testimonials from members of the school network and experts to come to this conclusion.

Mr. Drainville does not believe in this three-speed school in Quebec. Note the verb used in the last sentence: “believe”.

Mr. Drainville, so that we can debate this, whether or not this “three-speed school” exists in Quebec, I would like you to tell me about the research or documentaries that have, in contrast to the three examples that I quoted above, affirmed that there is no three-tiered school in Quebec. That our school system is not segregationist. Because for now, Mr. Drainville, all you have offered us as evidence to support your assertion that there is no three-tier school in Quebec is your belief.

I thought you wanted to bring the debate to the level of evidence. It is not yet too late to release these famous data.

Looking forward to discussing with you, data in hand!
