[Lettre] For the economy, but against the environment?

Only a few days after the publication of the environmental report produced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Trudeau government announced the approval of the Bay du Nord oil project to revive the economy of Newfoundland. Economy has always trumped the environment, and it is high time that this convention changed.

If global warming continues like this, it is obvious that humanity is heading headlong towards its own end. […] In the long term, this oil project will have a monstrous impact on the biodiversity of the region and will emit tons of greenhouse gases.

Against all logic, the economic concerns of a single region trump global environmental conditions, yet the economy depends on the survival of the planet. By continuing like this, the next generations will live in a whole other world, a world that no one wants to know. Is this really the price to pay to ensure a prosperous economy?

By this announcement, it is simple to conclude that planet Earth, the home of all, will never surpass the economy.
