I just finished the series Disobey. Chantal Daigle’s choice.
On several occasions, during the viewing of the six episodes, I had to put the viewing on hold in front of the overflow of violence. On several occasions, I found myself in rage/in tears, seeking refuge in the arms of my boyfriend – This boyfriend who accompanied me when I had an abortion in 1988. It was our decision, but it was clear that mine prevailed. The doctor who terminated your pregnancy is the same one who was to abort you in Sherbrooke. A good man. I would have wished you. I don’t know how the Boston doctor treated you, but I hope he was kind. Because you needed it, after the hell that this man who I won’t name had just put you through.
I know very well: the series is not real life, there is a part of fiction, and the acting of the actors was the subject of a textual, then artistic dramatization. Nevertheless: we can imagine very well what you were able to experience when you were only 20-21 years old. I comfort myself by telling myself that you were able to benefit from the support of your family, then of the feminist activists who literally saved you by taking you to Boston.
Wherever you are, I hope you are happy today. Knowing that this man who wanted to subject you to his paternity has been accused of assaulting women on several occasions, I can’t imagine what your life would have been like.
Well, I wanted to say thank you. Thank you for having the courage to say no. Thanks for holding on. Thanks for disobeying.
Thank you to the women who helped you. Thanks for all of us. Your story will not be forgotten.
