Let’s protect the future of the language, demand CEGEP in French

Mr. Brian Myles, Director, Ms. Marie-Andrée Chouinard, Editor-in-Chief,

Thank you for devoting a long editorial, on August 10, to recalling the concern for the French language in Quebec expressed during the adoption of the law making French the official language in July 1974 and the adoption of Bill 101 in August 1977. But I was very disappointed to see that you limited yourself to highlighting “the gap that allows people to freely choose vocational training in secondary school in English” without daring to mention the equally serious anomaly of French-speaking Quebecers and immigrants who choose to undertake studies in English in CEGEP with virtually no constraints. Why dismiss without discussion the position of those who rely on scientific studies to demonstrate that college education should be mandatory in French, except for the historical English-speaking minority, a necessary structuring measure? And talking about “cultural sovereignty” while refusing political sovereignty is a sham. This is what Bourassa was trying to make us believe is possible!

To establish a normal public school system in French, political will is still needed, which requires courage and determination to reestablish what should have been done a long time ago. Why this denial of the problem that the CAQ has not solved?
