Letizia, Mathilde, Mary… the queens all in blue for the 18th birthday of the heirs to their Crowns

It is a tradition throughout European royal families. When a child turns 18, his mother dresses in blue. And we had the opportunity to have it confirmed, this October 31, 2023, in Madrid, while Princess Leonor was expected at the Spanish Parliament, to take the oath on the Constitution of her country.

A tradition across Europe

If the young girl had a pantsuit by Sastreria Serna, her mother wore a Carolina Herrera dress, one of her favorite brands. The former journalist was focused throughout the event, even if she kissed her daughter, after this great achievement which now technically allows her to succeed her dad, Felipe VI, from a constitutional point of view.

Before Letizia of Spain, other queens also wore blue to celebrate the coming of age of their eldest child. For Maxima of the Netherlands it was 2022, for Crown Princess Catharina-Amalia. For her part, Princess Mette-Marit of Norway wore blue for her daughter, Ingrid Alexandra, last year. Mathilde of Belgium celebrated the 18th birthday of Princess Élisabeth of Belgium, in 2019… and of course always in blue. Queen Silvia wore blue for Princess Victoria of Sweden’s 18th birthday in 1995. Finally, Mary of Denmark, whose style is regularly compared to that of Kate Middleton, also found an all-blue look. for the birthday of Christian of Denmark in 2023.

Why no British?

As for the British royal family, we recall that Lady Diana died long before the 18th birthday of her eldest son, Prince William. And for her part, the new Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, will be able to follow this tradition when Prince George comes of age… in 2031.
