“Les Oiseaux ivres” and “Maria Chapdelaine” in the lead at the Quebec Cinema Gala

The Drunken Birds and Maria Chapdelaine dominate the nominations for the next Quebec Cinema Gala, which will be presented on June 5.

Adaptation of a tale by Fred Pellerin, The Time Snatcher by Francis Leclerc follows with 13 nominations, mainly in technical categories. Beans by Mohawk director Tracey Deer, who looks back on the events of the Oka crisis, also did well with 11 nominations, notably for best film. Bootlegger by Caroline Monnet is also in the running for the most prestigious Iris of the evening, as is the biographical drama norbourg by Maxime Giroux which will hit theaters in a few days.

While the Gala du Cinéma Québécois has had anemic audiences in recent years, it should be noted that a few more commercial films have managed to carve out a place for themselves this year in certain categories. The very polarizing Aline, inspired by the life of Céline Dion, appears among others eight times in the list of nominees; Danielle Fichaud and Sylvain Marcel in particular could walk away with the statuette for best actress and best actor in a leading role for their interpretation of Maman Dion and René Angélil. Significant success in theaters last summer, The Perfect Family Guide by Ricardo Trogi receives two nominations, as does goodbye happiness by Ken Scott.

Outside Serge Outsidethe documentary on Serge Thériault by Martin Fournier and Pier-Luc Latulippe which caused a lot of ink to flow, is unsurprisingly the big favorite for the Iris for best documentary.

The Quebec Cinema Gala will be broadcast on June 5 on Radio-Canada and will be hosted once again this year by actress Geneviève Schmidt. Moviegoers will be able to vote during the evening for the Iris Audience Award, for which ten of the most popular Quebec films of the year are in the running.

Finally, the gala will pay tribute to actress Louise Portal to highlight her 50-year career.
