They went for their final. The XV of France signed a fourth victory in a row in the Six Nations Tournament by easily dominating Wales (39-14), Sunday April 23, at the Stade de Alpes in Grenoble. After an excellent first half (29-0 at the break), Les Bleues did not score in the last half hour, not helped by difficult weather conditions. But they remained strong to win and remain undefeated in front of 18,600 spectators, a new record for a Tournament match pending the final at Twickenham, where 50,000 people are expected.
The objective in the tricolor camp was to reassure themselves and show their strength before the announced final against England. He was reached without shaking too much. Serious and generally solid, the French women shone and then resisted the pressure and the Welsh awakening.
Determined, the Bleues first delivered a high-level first period. Immediately in the legs, they struck from the start of the match, with Romane Ménager’s first try on the first offensive of the match (2nd). Before quickly doubling the bet on a beautiful movement of Gaëlle Hermet (9th), renewed holder in third line, author of a new good performance and elected player of the match.
Trust and lessons before England
Better organized, physically and technically superior, the players of Gaëlle Mignot and David Ortiz played their rugby and chained the offensives in the Welsh camp. Enough to secure the offensive bonus just before half-time, after a speedy double from Mélissande Llorens (25th, 40th).
Well in place, the French team has long been able to manage its few weak moments, as when the meeting was a little more balanced after half an hour of play. But the dynamic was a little jammed in the second half. Les Bleues left the ball to the proud Welsh, and worked to contain the opposing highlights. Shaken, they only cracked twice, conceding two tries in five minutes just before the hour mark, as the rain fell and the wind picked up over Grenoble.
Second in the general classification, the Bleues now have an appointment on Saturday April 29 in England (2 p.m. live on France 2 and france.tv). Facing the Red Roses, they will play in the final of this 2023 edition, to try to put their name on the charts for the first time since 2018. And thus avoid finishing in second place behind the English for the fourth year in a row.
