Monday June 20, the day after the second round of the legislative elections, two faces embody the scathing setback for Emmanuel Macron’s party: Christophe Castaner and Richard Ferrand, defeated in this election. In five years, the presidential majority has lost more than 60 seats.

Richard Ferrand, President of the National Assembly, and Christophe castanerpresident of the group La République en Marche (LREM) of the Assembly, were defeated in the second round of the legislative elections on Sunday 19 June. They were two party heavyweights and two historic supporters of Emmanuel Macron, and are among the 63 deputies that the presidential majority has lost in the National Assembly. In 2017, they were 308 with an absolute majority. Monday, June 20, they are only 245.

In Brest (Finistère), it was the Nupes candidate, Mélanie Thomin, who beat Richard Ferrand. His voters wanted to reject one of the key reforms of Emmanuel Macron’s program: that of raising the retirement age to 65 years. Did the late entry into the campaign of the President of the Republic contribute to this failure? In any case, the absence of clear voting instructions to block the National Rally embarrasses the majority. At the Assembly, Monday, June 20, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, dodged, rather embarrassed by the question.
