Legislative 2022: A Borne government minister already beaten!

During the first round of the legislative elections, the Nupes (coalition of left-wing parties) and Together! (coalition of the parties of the presidential majority) played an equal game at the polls. For Emmanuel Macron, re-elected last April for a second term as President of the Republic, the stakes are high: to obtain a majority in the National Assembly. And it is not won in advance. Already, one of his ministers has been beaten in the second round of voting.

In effect, Justine Benin was beaten on Saturday June 18 in the second round of the legislative elections in the 2nd constituency of Guadeloupe, with 41.35% of the votes behind Christian Baptiste (DVG), supported by Nupes, elected with 58.65% of the votes, announced the prefecture of Guadeloupe in a press release. She had been occupying for a few weeks the post of Secretary of State for the Sea, in the government of the brand new Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne (herself a candidate in Calvados). Outgoing deputy, Justine Benin played her position in the government during this election because the executive had reminded before the vote that in the event of failure in the legislative elections the minister candidate should leave the government in accordance with an unwritten rule but already applied in 2017 by the president.

After this electoral failure, which must shake a few other ministers who are not completely sure of their place (like Amélie de Montchalin, Minister for Ecological Transition or Clément Beaune, Secretary of State for European Affairs), Justine Benin reacted on RCI about his future. “In the current state of things [elle n’avait] no response to this yet“and should be fixed”Until monday“, she said according to AFP.

For Jean-Luc Mélenchon, unsuccessful presidential candidate in 2022 and leader of Nupes (which brings together LFI, PS, PC and EELV), the challenge of this second round of legislative elections is to obtain a majority in order to hope to impose a cohabitation with the president and to be named Prime Minister. Again, the bet is not won either. On the other hand, the Nupes could impose on the government a relative majority, making it difficult to vote on its future laws…
