The artist invented a new language as he performed the songs of his alternative German rock group. Damo Suzuki died at the age of 74, Can announced on social networks, without giving details. “It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of our wonderful friend Damo Suzuki, yesterday, Friday February 9, 2024. His boundless creative energy touched many people around the world, not only with Can, but also with his tour spanning all continents. We will forever miss Damo’s kind soul and cheeky smile. He will be joining Michael, Jaki and Holger for a fantastic jam! Much love to his family and children.”
The press release refers to Michael Karoli, Jaki Liebezeit and Holger Czukay, former members of Can, all three of whom have died. Legend has it that Damo Suzuki (link in English), who arrived in Germany from his native Japan two years after the formation of Can in 1968, played the streets of Munich to support himself. And that’s where he met Jaki Liebezeit and Holger Czukay. After the departure of singer Malcom Mooney, the two founding members of the krautrock group Can asked Damo Suzuki to take his place behind the microphone the same evening of the concert.
It will mark the history of the group for three years with three emblematic albums (Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi and Future Days) and legendary concerts before leaving music after marrying a German Jehova’s Witness. He returned to music ten years later for a solo career. Damo had been battling cancer for many years.
