Legault wants 100% of economic immigrants to be French-speaking by 2026

Premier François Legault wants Quebec to select 100% French-speaking immigrants by 2026.

Mr. Legault will give more details on this subject in the opening speech which he must deliver on Wednesday.

“We have succeeded in economic immigration to increase that to 80% and I think we must aim for 100%,” he said in a press briefing.

Quebec selects approximately 65% ​​of the 50,000 immigrants who come to settle in the province. The other portion hosted each year falls under federal government selection processes.

During the election campaign, Mr. Legault highlighted the fact that his government had succeeded in selecting 80% of French-speaking immigrants last year. He accused his predecessors of being content with 50%.

On Tuesday, Mr. Legault estimated that the objective of 100% will be achieved by 2026, the last year of his mandate.

“I think so, that’s what we have to aim for,” he said.

Parliamentary work resumed on Tuesday with the election of CAQ MP Nathalie Roy as President of the National Assembly.
