To read these words from Joan Tronto, philosopher of the theory of “ care » (take care), one would think that she has just received the mediation mandate from the Legault government for the current negotiation with the public sector. What the government and Ms. LeBel did not understand is that this exceptional negotiation is part of a transition of civilization for Quebec which should ensure all the care required, both in education and in health , from the status of vulgar and subordinate social functions to that of prestigious and sought-after social functions. However, they seem to be completely unaware of this. On the contrary, at a time when they are trying to rebuild the world of health and education, they are sawing off the branch on which they are sitting by not properly treating those who could help them.
If, as everyone recognizes, the need for care of all kinds is growing exponentially for a thousand and one reasons, notably the democratization of education, technological development, global warming and its cataclysms, pandemics, then we we have no choice. The government must agree to a radical social reconsideration of those who provide this care. Half measures will not resist the onslaught of these needs. All these trades, all these professions must be socially promoted to the rank of importance of the needs they serve. If these needs are socially important, their servants will have to be just as important. Gone are the days when the school teacher had to pay for the firewood for her local school herself and the nurse for her groceries with the monkey money of their “vocation”.
Many countries have already understood this. In Finland, female teachers have social consideration equivalent to that of liberal professions. There is a change to be made here in Quebec. This may well lead to reconsideration of which political party will give it.
