Learn all about planting raspberries with Étienne Wirth, our garden expert

The fall season, now is the perfect time to plant your raspberries, or any other small-fruited shrub. How best to transplant your raspberry bush, that is to say, remove it from its pot to put it in the ground, in your garden? Discover the steps to follow with our garden expert, Étienne Wirth.

  • Step 1 : rid the shrub of its dead or too dry wood to leave only these branches of the year.
  • 2nd step : take the raspberry out of its pot by turning it on its side, while pressing down. This is a bit tricky step. If the root ball holds well, it can be left as it is.

  • Step 3: prepare the hole to a depth of 10 cm then spread the soil from the bottom (= work with the spade so that the soil is not too hard or packed).
  • Step 4: place the tree carefully and take care not to bury it deeper than its level, it could sucker (=) and deviate from the mother plant.
  • Step 5: surround the shrub with soil or potting soil if you have it, especially if the soil is heavy, to pack down afterwards to avoid air at the bottom of the plant.
  • Step 6: water abundantly.
