“Le Retour” by Catherine Corsini and “Black Flies” by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire join the official competition

Despite the controversy surrounding “The Return” by Catherine Corsini, the film is in the running for the Palme d’Or at the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

The Cannes Film Festival announced on Monday April 24 the additions to its official selection. Two French films are in the running for the Palme d’Or: Black Flies by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire and The return by Catherine Corsini, at the heart of a controversy. The presence in competition of the twelfth film of the French filmmaker should have been announced on April 13, 2023, during the press conference of the festival which is held from May 16 to 27, 2023.

But the movie had been “left aside, following the denunciation of irregularities and acts of harassment on the set”reports The World (paid item) in an article published on April 24. His selection is now confirmed. “Toclose investigation (of) Thierry Frémaux’s team”general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, continues the newspaper.

Doubt also hovered over the entry into competition of Martin Scorsese’s latest feature film, Killers of the Flower Moonwhich will have its world premiere on the Croisette. Thierry Frémaux apparently failed to convince the American filmmaker.

A biopic on Abbé Pierre

At Un Certain Regard, we will find Only The River Flows by Wei Shujun and A night by Alex Lutz who will be screened out of competition at the end of the section. Still out of competition, the biopic about the founder of the movement Emmaus, Abbé Pierre – A Life of Fighting, signed by Frédéric Tellier – and with Benjamin Lavernhe in the skin of the religious – will be presented.

The Cannes Première section will host Perdidos in the night by Amat Escalante, Love and forests by Valerie Donzelli and Eureka by Lisandro Alonso with Viggo Mortensen, Chiara Mastroianni – mistress of ceremonies for this edition –And Maria de Medeiros.

Festival-goers will find in Special Sessions Little Girl Blue by Mona Achache, Bread and Roses by Sahra Mani and Marguerite’s Theorem by Anna Novion. Hypnotic by Robert Rodriguez and Project Silence by Kim Tae-gon will be screened in midnight screenings. As for short films, it’s Daughters of the Fire Pedro Costa who joins the official selection.
