Lawyer confirms former NHL player Alex Formenton charged

A lawyer for Alex Formenton has confirmed that the former NHL player is facing charges in London, Ontario.

In an email, Toronto-based lawyer Daniel Brown said police have laid charges against several players, including Formenton, in connection with an accusation made in 2018.

THE Globe and Mail reported that Formenton turned himself in to London police earlier in the day.

The newspaper, citing two anonymous sources, reported earlier this week that the charges were linked to an alleged gang sexual assault against a woman in a hotel room in London, Ontario, in 2018. None of the allegations were proven in court.

Formenton is one of five 2018 Junior Team Canada players who recently took an indefinite leave of absence from their professional clubs. The leave came following a report that five members of that team had been asked to turn themselves in to police to face sexual assault charges.

Formenton, who previously played for the Ottawa Senators, is currently playing in Switzerland. Carter Hart of the Philadelphia Flyers, Michael McLeod and Cal Foote, both of the New Jersey Devils, and Dillon Dube of the Calgary Flames have also been granted leave of absence from their respective NHL teams in recent days.

A London Police spokesperson said any updates will be provided at a press conference on February 5. A message left with Formenton’s agent was not immediately returned.
