(Montreal) The lecturers at Laval University on Wednesday, 92.6%, adopted a ten-day strike mandate to be launched at the appropriate time.
These approximately 1,600 workers have been without an employment contract since last December. Their union explains that they aspire to reduce their precariousness, criticizing the university management for wanting to stop allocating all teaching-related tasks based on seniority and competence.
The union adds that in terms of salaries, the Quebec university offers less than what was offered to public sector workers.
The Union of Lecturers of Laval University (SCCCUL), affiliated with the CSN, affirms that lecturers give more than half of undergraduate teaching, but that their payroll only represents 7 % of revenue from tuition fees and government funding for university operations.
The president of the union, Louis Emond, criticizes the university management for only proposing a guaranteed impoverishment of lecturers for the next five years and for perpetuating their precariousness.
Last winter, some 1,300 professors at Laval University went on strike which ended after the intervention of a mediator-conciliator.
