Who will succeed Christian Jacob at the head of the Republicans? The president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Laurent Wauquiez, gave up on Sunday July 17 to run for the presidency of his party, which must appoint its new leader in the fall.

“Today, after much thought, I have decided not to run for president of the Republicans”announced the one whose Christian Jacob had made his favorite to succeed him, in a press release posted on his Facebook account. “This choice, I make it because I believe that we must devote all our energy to this refoundation to which our country aspires. Such a requirement does not support any dispersion. We must give ourselves totally to it; we must take some distance with the political fight, because today there is no longer any answer, because the game of little phrases and sterile polemics no longer allows the voice of the French to be heard”, defends Laurent Wauquiez. It is this mediocrity that has led the country to the state it is today. All of this pulls us down. The solution will come from a break with what politics has become.”

“The alternative that we must build must go beyond questions of apparatus, work with personalities with different backgrounds, rub one’s brains with all those who will want to seek this start, wherever they come from”, continues the former minister and president of the party. We have to look for new ideas, have the time to prepare (…) I am convinced that this is the only way that will make it possible to meet the great democratic choice of 2027.

Christian Jacob left the presidency of the Republicans on July 1, after three years at the head of a party in crisis. He is replaced by the number 2 of the party, the deputy of Doubs Annie Genevard, who will ensure the interim until the next congress scheduled for November.
