Quebecer Laurent Dubreuil continues his start to the season with a bang on the long track speed skating World Cup circuit. After his victory the day before over the same distance, the Lévisien finished second in the 500 meters, behind the Japanese Tatsuya Shinhama, in Stavanger, Norway.
For Dubreuil, 29, this is a fourth consecutive podium in the 500 meters this season. He maintains his first place in the cumulative distance standings with 216 points, two ahead of Shinhama
Running in the last pair to start with Shinhama, Dubreuil has kept pace perfectly with his main rival this season. Shinhama (34.578) finally narrowly edged the Quebecer by three hundredths of a second.
“It may have been my best streak in my career,” Dubreuil said. The 500m is really tight every time. To see that I’m able to do four very consistent races, and at a high level, it’s really satisfying. Shinhama is really my big rival and we push each other. “
Russian Artem Arefyev completed the podium.
Several Canadian skaters placed in the top five in the B finals. Albertan Brooklyn McDougall recorded the fastest time in the 500m, Saguenéenne Valérie Maltais took third place in the 1500m and Albertan Gilmore Junio finished fifth. at 500m. The next World Cup stop will be December 3-5 in Salt Lake City. The following week, the Canadian team will host the next round in Calgary.
