“I am not essential to the CFDT.” Ihe secretary general of the first trade union in France, Laurent Berger, announced on Wednesday April 19, in an interview with Worldthat he will step down on June 21. “It is neither a whim nor a choice dictated by current events”specifies the one who led the opposition in the street to the pension reform.
Arrived at the head of the union in November 2012, Laurent Berger will be replaced by Marylise Léon, current number two of the CFDT. “I believe it is important for women to be at the head of trade unions”he says in The world, while Sophie Binet replaced Philippe Martinez at the head of the CGT. About his successor, he assures:
“She is capable, with the team that will be around her, of giving new impetus. (…) She is dynamic, she has an understanding of the world of work that is strong, sometimes finer than mine . (…) She is appreciated within the house, she is close to people, human.”

Laurent Berger also affirms in this interview that he would not engage in politics at the end of his mandate. “No, I will not be a candidate in 2027”he explains. “Will I continue to do politics, that is to say participate in the life of the city? Yes. If some believe that I am going to keep quiet, that is a mistake. I will continue my life as activist.”
