Ten days after the start of the war in Ukraine, the European Union launched the procedure on Monday March 7 to examine the applications for membership of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, submitted a few days earlier. “It’s a symbol but above all a political gesture”said Fabienne Keller, Renaissance MEP on franceinfo. “It’s a strong enough step”adds the deputy. “These three countries have asked for help from the Union. Through this symbolic act, we will respond very positively and I welcome that.” Fabienne Keller also talks about a “show of support from the European Union”.
According to her, the present moment is “an incredible political moment where everything is going extremely fast” because, she adds, “these countries have made a strong political gesture, placing themselves on the side of democracy”. For her, it was normal to “consolidating countries as they move towards more democratic regimes”. Finally, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is calling for a Western embargo on Russian oil, the MP said “favorable”even if “this will not be without consequences for us”.
