It is still little known to the general public but is increasingly being used in the evening. In just a few years, nitrous oxide has even become one of the most widely consumed drugs in France. What are its effects?

When the party is in full swing, a few meters from the trendy bars of Lille (North) a strange gathering takes place in a parking lot. Balloon in hand, several young people get high on nitrous oxide, with complete impunity. They inhale this gas with psychotropic effects. They also have a ready-to-use kit: a canister of laughing gas poured into a balloon for a few minutes of euphoric delirium. “I work every day of the week, on Saturdays I have the right to act crazy”says a young party-goer.

But the effect is short-lived, it pushes consumers to start again. Although it is regulated, the sale of nitrous oxide is now legal, authorized in particular to make whipped cream. But on social networks, traffickers offer it for diverted use and the formats are increasingly large. The consumption of this gas can have serious consequences on health. In a rehabilitation center, the number of patients seriously poisoned by laughing gas has quadrupled in two years. In France, the number of people poisoned has increased 45-fold in five years.
