It really needed it after centuries spent with its feet in the water facing the Tramontane… the bell tower of Collioure, one of the emblems of the Catalan country, will benefit from a complete restoration, co-financed by the Ministry of Culture, the Department and the Region.
A rehabilitation closer to tradition
Listed in 1923, the bell tower built in the 17th century deserved the most careful restoration, which will moreover be supervised by the chief architect of historical monuments, Olivier Weets, and entrusted to the specialized company Rodrigues-Bizeul.
A project worth more than 4 million euros, which will consist of complete repair of masonry joints as well as at replacement of all damaged cayrous by period bricks, for the most authentic rendering possible.
The first stage will begin this week with the break of a scaffolding over the entire building. But the municipality thought of the hundreds of thousands of visitors who take pictures of the building each year. A tarpaulin reproducing the screen-printed image of the bell tower of Collioure will cover the entire metal structure.
The restored bell tower will reappear in all its splendor in early 2023, after a year of construction. The restoration work of the Church of Collioure should extend them at least four years.
