The Moutet madness. Trailing 3-6, 1-3, Frenchman Corentin Moutet turned the situation around and Suzanne-Lenglen to reach the round of 16 at Roland-Garros for the first time, Friday May 31. The French left-hander gained the upper hand over the Austrian Sebastian Ofner (3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1), relying on his sliced backhand, his multiple cross drop shots and his famous serves to the spoon. Enough to annoy the 45th in the world and his 1.90m frame.
If Sebastian Ofner showed the power of his serve and showed his opponent around the court, he came across a tireless Corentin Moutet, ready to defend every ball. The Austrian also surely paid for his nearly eight hours of fighting in his two previous matches, won in five sets after coming back from a two-set deficit.
The 25-year-old Frenchman had until now never gone beyond the third round at Roland-Garros (in 2019) and a Tricolore had not reached the round of 16 since Hugo Gaston in 2020. In the next round, Corentin Moutet will face the Italian Jannik Sinner, world number 2.
