If you’re a fan of “The Simpsons”, you probably know him. Larry the Barfly, or Larry the bar pillar, has been loyal to the position for 34 years, since the very first season. But the writers decided to make it disappear.

In an episode entitled “Cremains of the Day”, broadcast on Sunday April 21 in the United States, Larry Dalrymple or Larry “the barfly”, a morose and bald drunk who hung out in Moe’s tavern, alongside of Lenny, Carl, Barney and of course Homer, bows out. Springfield is in mourning, the information has been widely relayed by the Anglo-Saxon media, but also French, which evoke the disappearance of an emblematic character.

However, not everyone agrees on this point. If Larry the barman was a recurring character in Simpson, he was above all, for 34 years, a more than secondary character, always in the background. Apart from his penchant for alcohol, we probably won’t remember much about him. Moreover, the YouTube video which compiles his best lines only lasts 2 minutes 44. And if some Internet users are sincerely saddened by his disappearance, others are nasty at him. They ask “Frankly who knew Larry ?”or claim that he was arguably the only Simpsons character to have no personality or story.
To realize this, you only have to see Homer’s stunned face, unable to respond to his mother, when she asks him to tell her about his best memories with him. As if he had already disappeared before the creators made him die. As if alcohol had frozen everything, crushed everything, including the events of his life, which nevertheless necessarily one day led him to this counter. Because everyone, even bar stalwarts, has a story.
