Localized power outages are not uncommon in Kenya, but the country has recently experienced several large-scale blackouts. Much of Kenya, including the capital Nairobi, was plunged into darkness on Friday evening, August 30, the country’s main electricity supplier, Kenya Power and Lighting Company, said.
Six of the eight regions of the national electricity grid were completely without power at around 9:30 p.m. (local time). “We have lost power supply in several parts of the country, except the North Rift region and some parts of the Western region”Kenya Power and Lighting Company said, without giving details on the cause of the outage.
“We regret the inconvenience caused and ask our customers to be patient as we work to restore normal power supply as soon as possible.”
