The South should be full of tourists with one of the most beautiful natural regions of France, the Camargue, several municipalities of which are labeled Grand site de France.
It is sometimes called the little Camargue but it has all the big stuff. Labeled major sites of France, the Gard Camargue attracts two million visitors each year. The Carbonnière tower, on the road to Aigues-mortes, housed a toll booth 700 years ago. Today it welcomes tourists. “It is magnificent the well-appointed tower with a very beautiful panorama“, rejoices a tourist. The monument has been renovated and a path on stilts has been built in order to preserve nature. Everything has been done to deserve the label.
A personalized welcome
“We don’t want mass tourism, we’re going to try to have a personalized welcome“, explains Maeva David, Grand Site de France project manager. On the 50 hectares between the Rhône and the sea, nature and human activities form a unique identity recognized by the Grand site de France label. It took years of development as in front of the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes. The old car parks have disappeared from the landscape, hidden in the vegetation.
