An entire section of mountain collapsed in Yambali, Papua New Guinea. A deadly bloodletting, in the middle of lush vegetation. The landslide occurred at 3 a.m. on Friday, May 24. More than 2,000 sleeping villagers were buried alive under 6 to 8 meters of mud, according to authorities.

Survivors search for the body among huge blocks of stone. “There were houses, buses, cars, hotels, guest houses and at least 50 shops. All of this is destroyed, completely gone”declares a resident. “Four members of my family are buried alive, under the debris”, confides a man. Another lost his wife and two children. The first funerals took place. The village also housed a transient population, since it was the refuge of gold prospectors in the region.
