Funny Saturday for McLaren. While the motor home of the British team was decimated by a fire in the morning, Saturday June 22, Lando Norris brought smiles back to his family by claiming pole position for the Barcelona Grand Prix. All while taking care of his form, since the Briton took the lead in the very last seconds of qualifying.
Fourth in Q1, then in Q2, Lando Norris surprised everyone to claim his second career pole position in Formula 1, finishing 20 thousandths of a second ahead of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, who had just knocked out these qualifications. Incidentally, Lando Norris even set the lap record on the Barcelona circuit.
This performance may whet the appetite of the young Briton on Sunday, since of the 33 Barcelona Grands Prix, 30 have been won by a driver who started from the front row. However, he will have to resist Max Verstappen. On the second row, the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will put pressure on the leading duo, closely followed by the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
On the French side, note the good performances of the two Alpine drivers, since Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon moved their cars to the fourth row, in seventh and eighth position. Disappointment on the other hand for Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), eliminated in Q2 in front of his home crowd.
