Rents are expensive in Paris, but since 2019, they are supposed to be regulated. As some owners do not play the game, the town hall has decided to track down these abusive rents.

Under the sky of Paris, prices soar. Nine square meters for 550 euros excluding charges. A two-room apartment for 1,170 euros. Two examples which have just been pinned for non-compliance with the law, on the supervision of rents. A tenant has just discovered that the rent for her 15 m2 is illegal. The town hall has put its owner on notice. He must reimburse her more than 5,000 euros.

Risky justifications

And she is far from the only one. Since the beginning of the year, the town hall of Paris says it has received 215 reports. Eighteen owners were given formal notice for a total amount of 43,700 euros. But some owners seem to have found the parade. The rents being framed, they therefore charge an additional rent, which escapes the law, with sometimes hazardous justifications. In Paris, 70% of small apartments rented out by individuals do not comply with the law.
