During the last European election, immigration was one of the most important topics in the choice of vote after purchasing power and ahead of the environment. This theme is one of those which most divides the main parties for these legislative elections. Franceinfo takes stock of the various proposals in this area.

The National Rally wants to abolish land law and AME

For the National Rally, the fight against immigration is the priority. According to him, we must stop the “migratory submergence”. And Jordan Bardella wants to act quickly: “If I am Prime Minister, I will pass in the first weeks an emergency law which will facilitate the expulsions of delinquents and Islamists.” The president of the RN wants to abolish land law. Today, a child born in France to foreign parents becomes French when they come of age.

For Les Républicains, breaking with Eric Ciotti, this measure is considered too radical. They prefer to restrict it. On the other hand, both parties agree on the abolition of state medical aid (AME) to only cover vital emergencies. Today, the AME provides 100% coverage of medical costs for foreigners in an irregular situation. The government had tried to do this with the immigration law but it was reinstated by the deputies in committee for questions of collective health. On the left, the New Popular Front promises to perpetuate the AME.

The left wants to repeal the immigration law

The priority for the New Popular Front is to repeal the immigration law voted at the start of the year to “guarantee a dignified welcome” foreigners who wish to join France. The New Popular Front has listed twelve proposals on the themes of immigration. Among them, there is authorization to work for asylum seekers as well as social support, “facilitate” obtaining French nationality, and issuing visas, and regularizing workers, students, and parents of school children.

The NFP also wishes “the establishment of a rescue agency at sea and on land” pending its creation at European level or the creation of a “climate displaced status”. A policy judged “totally pro-immigration” by Emmanuel Macron, using the terms of the extreme right.

The majority wants to strengthen control of unaccompanied minors

For the presidential camp, the stated objective is to reduce illegal immigration. During his press conference, Emmanuel Macron said he wanted to strengthen control of unaccompanied minors, whom he considers to be a security problem. The majority also wants to continue to expel any delinquent or radicalized foreigner representing a threat to public order.

Gabriel Attal recalled that 12,000 people have already been expelled since 2012. The Prime Minister wants to open detention centers at Europe’s external borders to examine the situation of migrants before they arrive on our soil. On the other hand, nuanced the Prime Minister, France will continue to welcome renowned researchers, doctors, students with high potential as well as the qualified economic workers that our economic fabric needs.
