Lanaudiere | Man dies after car crashes into tow truck

(Sainte-Mélanie) An accident involving a car and a tow truck occurred Monday morning in Sainte-Mélanie, in the Lanaudière region. The people in the car were seriously injured, and the driver did not survive.

The death of the 28-year-old man was confirmed on the spot, indicated the Sûreté du Québec (SQ). When paramedics arrived, he was found unconscious in his vehicle.

Rescue pliers were needed to extricate the driver and his passenger. The 23-year-old woman was seriously injured and taken to hospital, but there are no fears for her life.

The collision took place around 11 a.m. on Route 348 at the corner of rang Kildare.

According to the SQ, the driver of the car would have made his mandatory stop on rang Kildare. “But it seems that the car entered the road without ensuring the total absence of danger to avoid an impact,” said SQ Sergeant Éloïse Cossette.

The truck adapted for towing vehicles traveling on Highway 348 could not avoid the collision. The driver of the tow truck sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

Route 348 has been temporarily closed in both directions to allow an SQ collision investigator to further document the circumstances of the accident.
