A young man died Saturday following a road accident involving an overloaded van in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, in Lanaudière. The driver could face criminal charges.

Police officers from the MRC de Matawinie and the Service de police de Manawan were called to intervene around 11 a.m. on Chemin Manawan following a swerve.
“The driver of a van traveling on Manawan Road would have lost control of his vehicle,” explained agent Stéphane Tremblay, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ). “There were eight people riding in the van,” more than the vehicle was designed to accommodate.
A young man was seriously injured and evacuated by a medical helicopter, but he did not survive. Six other people were injured, but there is no fear for their lives, said Agent Tremblay.
“The driver could face charges including impaired driving causing death,” added the spokesperson for the SQ, without being able to say if he was among the injured.
An investigation is ongoing and the driver is due to appear in the next few days.
