(Quebec) The installation of a dynamic warning system for road users along Highway 40 westbound, between Lavaltrie and L’Assomption in Lanaudière, will begin on Friday, but will not be completed on time. for the coming winter.
The system will be installed from November 12 until mid-December and will resume in the spring. The completion is scheduled for next summer by the Quebec Ministry of Transport.
Serious road accidents have occurred in the past in winter on this section of the Félix-Leclerc highway due to blowing snow which suddenly rendered visibility zero and affected the condition of the road.
In January 2019, a pile-up involved several dozen vehicles.
Thanks to a detection station that activates the flashing lights of two warning signs, road users will be informed in real time during episodes of blowing snow or extreme winter conditions.
The Ministry of Transport emphasizes that this measure to improve road safety will be added to those put in place since the 2019 pileup, in particular a windbreak made up of nearly 24,000 plants, the construction of which was completed this year.
The new system, consisting of a road weather station linked to a detection station and two dynamic warning signs, will be installed along Highway 40, westbound, between Highway 341 in L’Assomption and the Point-du-Jour service area, in Lavaltrie.
It will be powered by solar panels.
