She becomes the first woman to hold this position.

Lana Payne previously served as Unifor’s National Secretary-Treasurer, also the first woman to hold the position. She defeated Executive Assistant to the National President Scott Doherty and Unifor Local 444 President Dave Cassidy.

Mme Payne is also the former director of Unifor in the Atlantic and the former president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour.

Former National President Jerry Dias resigned in March. He was later charged with violating the code of ethics and democratic practices of the union’s constitution.

Dias took over as Unifor leader in 2013 and was re-elected in 2016 and 2019.

Unifor has over 315,000 members. The union represents workers in a multitude of sectors, including manufacturing, aerospace, forestry, energy and telecommunications.
