It is a moment awaited by rock fans, but not only. The Rock en Seine festival, which celebrated its 20th years of existence last year, is back at the end of August. While the Olympic and Paralympic Games are joining the party this year, 90 names are preparing to follow one another in the space of five days on the different stages set up in the national domain of Saint-Cloud (Hauts-de-Seine).
From the new king of electronic music Fred Again to the Italians of the group Maneskin or the British of Massive Attack, the lineup promises to be as solid as it is eclectic, with the stated aim of attracting all generations. Franceinfo tells you everything about this new edition of Rock en Seine.
The event: a unique French date for Lana Del Rey
Her presence alone is a remarkable fact. Long removed from the stage during her career, Lana Del Rey has returned to grace. In France, she filled the Olympia in a few minutes for her concert last summer. This year, ten years after her first experience in Saint-Cloud, the American artist has chosen to perform at Rock en Seine for her only date in France in 2024. It will be on Wednesday 21 August, opening day of the festival.
A date carefully marked in the fans’ calendar. The latter also confirm the fame that Lana Del Rey enjoys in France : the 21st August remains for now the only day for which there are no more tickets available for sale. After her European tour, Lana Del Rey will unveil her album Lassoa country-sounding project that will be released next September.
More than a hundred artists in total
In addition to the presence of Lana Del Rey, the first day also includes its share of artists appreciated by the public. Female, because, like last year, Rock en Seine renews its program exclusively composed of women on the 21st August. Belgian singer Rori opens the show, followed by Nell Mescal, Rachel Chinouriri, but also French singer Pomme who takes the main stage just before Lana Del Rey’s performance.
On Thursday, it’s the alternative rock band Maneskin who take up the torch. A day launched by the all-female London rock band The Last Dinner Party. Festival-goers will also be able to attend a performance by the Swedish rock band The Hives, or that of the versatile American rapper Teezo Touchdown, who can boast of having collaborated with Drake and Travis Scott.
The other event of the festival is also the return to France of Fred Again, headlining DJ on Friday 23 August. The London artist, one of the new kings of electronic music, has exploded in recent years. He will present his latest album USBreleased last April. Like Lana Del Rey, Fred Again’s presence at Rock en Seine will be his only French appearance in 2024. French pop artist Bonnie Banane is also scheduled for Friday. After her debut album Sexy Planet (2020), she released a second project, titled Ninilast April.
On Saturday, Californian punk rock band The Offspring and Massive Attack will take turns on the big stage. The British were already on the bill for the very first edition of Rock en Seine in 2003. Just like PJ Harvey, who performs on the final day, Sunday 25 August. LCD Soundsystem and the Pixies are also expected, among other artists, to close the event in style. Frenchwoman Zaho de Sagazan, seen at the recent closing ceremony of the Olympic Games, is also part of the cast on Sunday.
The Olympic and Paralympic Games are joining the party
As a symbol, Rock en Seine will host on Sunday 25 August the Paralympic torch relay. Last summer, the festival was pleased to have formed a partnership with the Olympic Organizing Committee 2024. “The 20th edition of the Rock en Seine festival will offer a program combining music and sport“, we can read on the official website of the Cultural Olympiad.
A photo exhibition in collaboration with the newspaper The Team titled Scenes & Stadiums – Reflections of emotions will be offered to festival-goers, for example. In the run-up to the Paris Paralympic Games, which will be held from 28 August 8 September, the event also promises “numerous initiatives for inclusion set up for people with disabilities as well as a parasports area“.
On the theme of accessibility, Rock en Seine is pleased to have welcomed “several hundred festival-goers with disabilities and their companions” during its various editions. The festival is notably supported by the APF association France Handicap.
