The 13 Heures Découverte takes you all week long to meet the most beautiful lakes in the world. This Wednesday, June 14, head to Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world. It is located on the border between the United States and Canada.

It is a natural border between the United States and Canada: Lake Superior is so large that the inhabitants compare it to an inland sea. In the great North American, expanses of fir trees mingle with crystal clear water. To see a small part of the lake, you have to board with Captain JB. He grew up on the shores of Lake Superior, he has been sailing along the coast for 28 years. But the crossing is far from resembling a traditional route. “Lake Superior is so big that it behaves a bit like an ocean. There are waves that can reach between six and nine meters high”says the captain.

Monks as local stars

The lake extends over more than 82,000 square kilometres, almost the equivalent of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The water is so pure that locals say you can drink it straight. But what makes this place famous is the color palette that surrounds it.

Untamed nature also attracted these three monks, who came to isolate themselves in the forest almost thirty years ago. “It’s out of this world, and it’s beautifully wild”, explains one of them. They have also become local stars thanks to their jams. In the shop, customers sometimes come from afar to visit and buy. At nightfall, the lake reveals its other secrets. There are glowing gems on the beaches to pick up. “It takes a lot of patience”points out a tourist.
