Lachine | Man stabbed to death in rooming house

A 40-year-old man died after being stabbed in a rooming house in the Lachine borough late Thursday evening. This is the eighth murder to occur this year on the territory of the Montreal police, who have already arrested a suspect.

This was confirmed by agent Jean-Pierre Brabant, spokesperson for the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM), late Friday morning. The victim was first rushed to a hospital, where his condition was considered critical. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

According to initial information provided by the police, the man was attacked with a knife late Thursday evening, a little before 11:45 p.m., in a rooming house located on 1D Avenue, near Provost Street, in the Lachine sector.

The man was seriously injured “in the upper body” and was “semi-conscious” when he was transported by ambulance, the police said.

A 28-year-old man, who had tried to flee before the arrival of patrol officers, was arrested not far from the scene following this event. He will be met by investigators and could face murder charges, if his involvement is confirmed. The suspect also had to be hospitalized, but his injuries are not life-threatening.

For the moment, the police do not know the reasons which would have pushed the suspect to attack his victim. It is also unknown if the two men have a special connection.

A security perimeter has been set up and is likely to remain in place for a good part of Friday, as the SPVM investigation continues. In particular, witnesses could be met and investigators would have to view video tapes from surveillance cameras located nearby, to try to retrace the exact sequence of events.
