Lac-Saint-Jean | Firefighter dies in farm fire

(Montreal) A volunteer firefighter lost his life in a fire in Saint-Edmond-les-Plaines, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Thursday evening.

Posted at 10:56 p.m.

The fire broke out around 5.15 p.m. on a dairy farm on 10and Row that housed 70 cows.

One of the volunteer firefighters was declared missing after the structure collapsed, said Sûreté du Québec spokesman Stéphane Tremblay.

“The 51-year-old man was pulled from the rubble and taken to hospital, where he was unfortunately confirmed dead,” he said.

The victim is part of a group of volunteer firefighters serving Saint-Edmond-les-Plaines and the neighboring municipalities of the MRC Maria-Chapdelaine.

At the end of the evening, the fire was still not extinguished.

An investigation will be opened by the Sûreté du Québec, jointly with the CNESST, to establish the causes and circumstances of the death of the firefighter.
