La Presse at COP26 | Five billion for electric buses in Quebec

(Edinburgh, United Kingdom) François Legault announces that 5 billion will be invested to allow Quebec to reach its objective of electrifying 55% of its urban bus fleet by 2030. The Quebec government will pay 3.65 billion of this amount, while the rest will be funded by the federal government and the transport companies.

On the sidelines of the United Nations climate summit in Glasgow, the Prime Minister said he was certain that these new electric buses will be manufactured in part in Quebec. He said the government was working with companies Lion Électrique and Novabus to adapt their facilities so that they could respond to tenders.

“We have to be careful, we have to respect international rules, but we are very confident that the buses will be manufactured in Quebec,” said Mr. Legault.

“No one should be naive. All the states of the world are trying to make the maximum possible at home. We will not be different from the others, ”he added.

With this investment, Quebec is purchasing approximately 2,148 electric buses, the acquisition process of which will begin within six months. Of these 5 billion, 2.6 billion will be used to build and convert garages, and 2.4 billion for the purchase of buses.

Quebec’s plan for a green economy predicts that 30% of light motor vehicles (1.5 million vehicles) will be electric by 2030, as will 40% of taxis and 65% of school buses.
