Saint-Germain church
Built in the 12th century in the purest Romanesque style, the church of La Ferté-Loupière houses a Danse Macabre recognized as one of the most prestigious in Europe.
This exceptional pictorial ensemble, which had been executed at the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century, then covered with whitewash at an unknown period, was brought to light in 1910.
La Ferté-Loupière’s Danse Macabre includes 42 characters representing the entire social hierarchy: the actor, 3 dead musicians and 19 couples respectively made up of a dead person and a living person. Thus will parade the procession of the living carried along by their death to the sound of the terrible sarabande.
The church of La Ferté-Loupière has other paintings on its walls: The Dict of the Three Dead and the Three Living, which can be considered as an introduction to the Dance of Deathas well as two more modest scenes representing Saint Michael slaying the Dragon and The Virgin of the Annunciation.
