Paul Mayaux, the president of Fage, the Federation of General Student Associations, calls Thursday, September 15 on franceinfo to broaden the criteria for awarding scholarships, while the Minister of Higher Education, Sylvie Retailleau, announces in an interview with World the launch of a major consultation on the subject, starting in October.

La Fage believes that there are “tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands” of students who are forced to work to finance their studies and “live with dignity”without being able to benefit from scholarships based on social criteria. “They come from the middle classes and are not beneficiaries of scholarships based on social criteria because they have parents who earn 50, 60 euros too much”, explains Paul Mayaux. According to him, “we must bring these people into this system”.

Student organization calls for reform “structural” scholarships “which is durable”. She suggests, for this, “to index it to inflation”. “This year we had an increase in scholarships to 4% and inflation to 6.1% when it was increased and we would like to make us understand that this is a strong gesture towards young people”, ironically Paul Mayaux. According to him, “it’s barely keeping up with the rising cost of living for students”.

If the Fage is in favor of the consultation desired by the minister, its president “demands an implementation at the next academic year”. “If ever these people, those from the lower middle classes, are not integrated into the next academic year, then we will have missed the reform”he concludes.
