From this Friday, June 2, it is no longer possible to take a shower on the beaches of La Ciotat (Bouches-du-Rhône). In a context of drought, this decision is relatively well accepted by residents and tourists.

In La Citotat (Bouches-du-Rhône), swimmers are requested to keep salt and sand on the skin. As of Friday, June 2, it is now impossible to shower. Faced with the lack of water, the city has removed the nine showers that were installed on public beaches. On the spot, there are those who approve of the measure. “These showers were used almost 8 hours a day for several months. I think it consumed phenomenal amounts of water”, judges a man. A complete woman: “In present times, […] You have to save water.”

28 municipalities on drought alert

However, others find it difficult to come to terms with this decision. “Just to wash your hands at the beach […], now you have to buy water or go to a cafe to do it. It’s a little less easy”, says a man. In the Bouches-du-Rhône, 28 municipalities are currently placed on drought alert. La Ciotat wanted to anticipate possible restrictions. “We can consider that at the end of the season, we would have filled three municipal swimming pools”, explains Jean-Marc Martinez, assistant to the environment at La Ciotat. This decision was also taken by other cities in France, such as Pornic (Loire-Atlantique).
