French footballer Kylian Mbappé is the highest paid player in the French Ligue 1 championship, according to newspaper estimates The Team, published Thursday March 21, in partnership with France Bleu. The Paris Saint-Germain player receives, according to the sports daily, a salary of six million euros gross per month.
A majority of Parisian players in the Top 30
The Frenchman is followed by one of his compatriots, in second place in the ranking. Former Barça striker Ousmane Dembélé, recruited last summer by PSG, earns 1.2 million euros gross monthly and is tied with PSG’s Brazilian defender Marquinhos. Two other Parisians earn more than a million euros per month: defenders Lucas Hernandez and Milan Skriniar.
You have to go down to 11th place in this ranking to see the first two players who are not part of the capital club: Marseillais Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Monegasque Wissam Ben Yedder, who earn around 650,000 euros gross monthly.
“Clearly, since the arrival of Qatar, there is a real difference between PSG and the other Ligue 1 clubs.”points out Pascal Dronne, deputy football editor-in-chief of the Team, guest on franceinfo, Thursday March 21. According to him, despite the announced departure of Kylian Mbappé from the capital club, “we will continue to have this two-speed Ligue 1, with a PSG which still has a budget that is truly incomparable with the other Ligue 1 clubs“.
Two Lyonnais appear in 16th place, Alexandre Lacazette and Nemanja Matic, with 500,000 euros gross monthly. Of the 30 best-paid players in France, 18 are Parisians, five from Marseille, six from Lyon and one from Monaco.
Pascal Dronne also gave some clues on how to develop this ranking: “We work with our network of informants. It could be among the managers, among the players themselves… Sometimes, the players prefer to give us their salary to avoid us writing something stupid“.
Players paid much less
As for coaches, Parisian Luis Enrique is at the top of the ranking, with a gross salary estimated at 923,500 euros per month, followed by AS Monaco coach Adi Hutter, with 250,000 euros, and Patrick Vieira who receives 230,000 euros. OM coach, Jean-Louis Gasset, earns 150,000 euros gross monthly.
Very far from the level of the top 30 players in Ligue 1, the highest paid player in Women’s Division 1 is Marie-Antoinette Katoto, PSG striker. According to information from The Teamthe player earns 58,000 euros gross per month.
“This whole economy of women’s football is today obviously very behind Ligue 1. France is trying to put things in place to make up for this delay and we also see that clearly, there is a two-speed Arkema D1 , with PSG and OL on one side and all the other teams on the other side”, notes Pascal Dronne, from the Team.
