Kyiv claimed a slight advance in eastern and southern Ukraine. What is the assessment of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, one month after its launch?

The gains of the Ukrainian counter-offensive are rather modest: 37 km² across the country last week, including 9 km² in ballast of the country, in the Sloviansk region (Ukraine). In addition, in the region of Lyman (Ukraine), the Russians are on the offensive. It’s not much, especially if we compare to the great counter-offensive of last September and October, when the Ukrainians took over the regions of Lyman and Kherson (Ukraine). But in the meantime the situation has changed. The winter passed by: the Russians reinforced their positions and, since then, they have defended them.

Ukrainians keep hope

In the Bakhmout region (Ukraine), every m² is the subject of a fierce struggle and the Ukrainians have to dislodge the Russians in the trenches, practically one after the other. The hope of the Ukrainians is that once these first lines of defense pass, the Russian fortress could collapse, but the situation is not there yet, explains the journalist of France Télévisions, Marc de Chalvron.
