It’s a military base hidden in the forest on the outskirts of kyiv. The exact location is kept secret for security reasons. Because these hooded men are preparing what could be the next big battle in Ukraine: the reconquest of Crimea. The peninsula was annexed in 2014 by Russia, the operation is ultra sensitive. In this exercise, the Storm battalion tries to dislodge Russian soldiers entrenched in a house. For these soldiers, the attack on the bridge that connects Russia and Crimea is a warning sign: “This is really good news. One more sign after the airport strikes and soon there will be more signs”.

In the streets of kyiv, the same feeling that this fight is necessary: “We all want Crimea to become Ukrainian again and as soon as possible”.

“According to Vladimir Putin, the annexation of Crimea is a given and non-negotiable fact. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hears it differently. For him, the war with Russia began in Crimea and it is in the Crimea that it will end”emphasizes Ben Barnier, special envoy to kyiv.
