The Ukrainian army claimed on Monday that it had taken back 500 km from the Russians2 of territories in two weeks of counter-offensive in the Kherson region, thus giving its first quantified estimate of its territorial gains in the south.
“Our successes over the past two weeks are quite convincing,” Natalia Goumeniouk, the military spokesperson for the South, told the press, “we have liberated about 500 km2 “.
According to her, the localities of Vysokopillia, Bilogirka, Sukhy Stavok and Myroliubivka “are entirely under the Ukrainian banner”.
Ukraine has announced that it has in total taken over some 3000 km2 to the Russians, mostly in a lightning counter-offensive in the northeast, in the Kharkiv region, forcing Moscow’s troops to withdraw.
In the south, the Ukrainian operation, launched a little earlier, seems to be progressing more slowly.
Kirill Stremoussov, deputy head of the Russian occupation in Kherson, told the Ria Novosti news agency that the situation was “under Russian control”.
“An evolution like in Kharkiv is simply impossible,” he said.
