The city of Kherson, in the south of Ukraine, could be a very symbolic reconquest for the men of Volodymyr Zelensky. In one of the columns in action, the France Télévisions team met a couple who met at the front.
A fighter on the front line in the Kherson region. Tatiana is a doctor and fights with her husband, in the same unit. Their weapons are multiple rocket launchers. Lurking in the undergrowth, the battalion awaits orders. This is the ongoing offensive, to liberate the city of Kherson. “I was already a commander in a rank unit, when Tatiana was transferred to us. We met, we started to fight together, and that’s it, it happened like that”, says the fighter. Message from the staff: we must leave immediately. Their mission: reach another position as quickly as possible. A target has just been spotted: a unit of Russian soldiers. Installation in a few seconds, on a deserted road 19 km from enemy positions. The target coordinates are adjusted. Tatiana manages communication with the general staff and stands ready to help if the attack goes wrong. After the shooting, they have less than three minutes to leave the scene.
Not being spotted by the enemy is the only alternative to staying alive. They then arrive at another fallback position, in the fields and wait for the next target. Verification of the positioning of the rockets, coffee and souvenirs of this wedding celebrated last August during two days of leave. “It’s easier for me. Now I always know what he’s doing, and he always knows what I’m doing”Tatyana said. “It’s really better. I know I can help him if something happens”, adds her husband. On this Kherson front, Ukrainian forces have taken over nearly 90 localities from the Russians in recent weeks. The unit of Tatiana and her husband therefore has morale. “We are going to liberate Kherson. But afterwards, we will have to clean up the place, completely drive out the enemy, restore normal life”, said the commander. A prospect of revenge that keeps them going. They were already there almost eight months ago when the city fell to the Russians.
