Ukraine is not seeking to “annex” Russian territories, assured the spokesman of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Georguiï Tykhiï, on Tuesday, August 13, referring to the military operations underway for a week in the Russian region of Kursk.
“Unlike Russia, Ukraine does not need other people’s property. Ukraine does not want to annex any territory of the Kursk region, but it wants to protect the lives of its people.”the diplomat said at a press conference. According to him, his country aims to create a buffer zone along the border to protect its population and army from the incessant Russian bombing and to weaken the Kremlin’s offensive, which continues to advance in eastern Ukraine.
The Ukrainian offensive in Russia is “legitimate” and will stop if Moscow accepts a “just peace” and ends its invasion of Ukraine, he added. “The sooner Russia agrees to restore a just peace (…), the sooner the incursions of Ukrainian defense forces into Russian territory will cease.”he detailed, describing these operations as“absolutely legitimate”.
Ukraine, which launched an attack on the Russian region of Kursk on August 6, has been trying for two and a half years to counter the invasion launched by Moscow, which occupies up to 20% of its territory, including its Crimean peninsula annexed in 2014. The Ukrainian army claimed on Monday to control 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory.
