The Ukrainian army has reportedly destroyed a huge weapons depot on Russian territory in Toropets, 450 km from its border. It may have used a new type of jet drone.
The explosions caused a mini-earthquake on Tuesday, September 17. Residents of Toropets, Russia, witnessed huge explosions. At daybreak the next day, a cloud of smoke still filled the sky. Several neighborhoods were evacuated. Officially, the target has not been specified, but Russian military bloggers point to an ammunition depot. Satellite images compare the location before and after.
The general who inaugurated the site in 2018 explained that the facility was to safely house Russian missiles. The Ukrainians are said to have used a new type of jet drone, faster than propeller-driven models and capable of traveling the 500 km from the border to the depot. The hypothesis of a long-range Western missile is excluded, due to international regulations. In April 2023, a building was struck 2,000 km from Ukraine.
